What do we take for a modern sculpture? What is the basis for our delimitation of modern, classic or ancient sculptures?
It is clear that just like anything else the concept of modern sculpture is very relative. At the start we can suppose that we are taking of artworks created recently or in the near past.
However, let’s contemplate the topic of a modern sculpture from a different angle. Let’s assign to the concept of modern what is seen now as innovative and of unique style.
To a greek sculptor 3000 years ago, his work was a modern sculpture. If we compare it to the beginnings of greek hieratic sculpture with little movement and expression, a sculpture alike Praxiteles, inventor or the praxitelian curve, would seem very modern to all before him.
Similarly, a sculptor of the gothic, would believe his own work to be modern sculpture when contrasted with their forefathers. The impressionism of Rodin, Giacometti, etc., would see their own works as a new step in sculpture and would consider themselves to be moderns.
Later on cubists such as Picasso, Juan Gris, etc., saw an advancement in their form of understanding sculptures from various perspectives at the same instant. All of them, allowing themselves to be carried away by the veracity.
Further down the road, the realism lead to hyperrealism, abstract sculpture to the conceptual and here we are today. All of these sculptors certainly believed their artworks to be modern sculpture.
It is possible the idea in itself is not real, it is most likely an evolution of the understandings of form in art, surprising to the beholder and offering him different focus, ways of observing and concepts that tend to break away from the past.
The breakaway from the established is always a form of adapting new outlook of an author. This is to say, new direction in the art world.
The concept of modern sculpture, comes as more imposed, due to the necessity of evolving from the fact that to consider something as modern it ought to be something current. The old always carries a certain sense of something finished that ought not to be renewed.
In 100 years all will be finished. We’ll get surprised by new artists with their new proposals and ideas resulting from their views, and we’ll call them modern sculpture then. For now, if you wish to discover modern sculpture, you can do it at our art gallery Buysculpture.
